Steve Poltz Evanston Concert reviews
GREAT EVENING...but adults only?!
Steve Poltz, Stripped Down not only took you through the man's career musically, but, as advertised, you got to know the man himself with tales of his travels, his childhood, his interest in music and the lack of interest in schooling, his parents, his friends, his activities - simply a well-rounded biography interwoven with his hits and his personal favorites. With the exception of it being near blizzard conditions with several inches of snow on top of a layer of ice and blowing snow, we were very happy that Steve Poltz made it to New Albany and we were advised the show would go on by noon in the day. Too bad - it was truly a great "one-man-show" on this blustery winter evening. A very quick moving hour and 45-minute show, all was entertaining - but a warning - many children were in the audience and there was sexual innuendo, and a few F-bombs as well as a few other R-rated words utilized during the show. Whether playing acoustically, playing electric guitar with his laptop as his backup band, or singing some heartfelt songs about his parents while his guitarist from the band played while he sang [his guitarist otherwise performed as the guitar tech on this evening], Steve's voice was strong and audience participation was very easy to entice. Overall, a very entertaining experience, and - minus the weather conditions - my wife enjoyed this trip down memory lane very much, and it made for her a wonderful Christmas gift! It was obvious that many who had purchased tickets for the sold out show thought it had been canceled or postponed, or just decided the weather conditions weren't worth the effort. But as an adult viewer, it was befitting a man of Steve's age, experience, and talent to swear a few times, playing to his screaming fans in the front row.
